How this conversion works
Yards survive in American football, fabric shops and British gardening; metres rule almost everywhere else. Type in either box and the other answers, so a 25-yard roll of fabric (22.86 m) or a 50-metre pool measured against a 25-yard one can be compared directly.
A yard is a little shorter than a metre — about 8.6% shorter — which is why the metres figure is always the smaller of the two. The table below covers 1 to 100 yards.
The exact formula
metres = yards × 0.9144
1 yard = 0.9144 m exactly (3 feet × 0.3048 m). The reverse is yards = metres ÷ 0.9144.
Exact constants, honest rounding. Every conversion here uses the exact international definitions printed on the page (1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly). Results are rounded for display only — the working underneath is never rounded. For engineering, medical or legal work, verify against a certified instrument.
