Oven Temperature Converter — °C, °F & Gas Mark

180 °C is 356 °F by exact conversion — the setting US recipes print as 350 °F — and Gas Mark 4. Oven dials are marked in rounded conventional steps, which is why the chart below matters as much as the formula: type any temperature, or pick a Gas Mark and read both scales.

How this conversion works

Three languages for the same heat: Celsius in most of the world, Fahrenheit in American recipes, Gas Mark on British ovens. The converter runs Celsius and Fahrenheit live in both directions and reports the nearest Gas Mark; the Gas Mark picker above sets the conventional temperature for that mark.

Why the chart and the converter disagree slightly: oven manufacturers mark dials in tidy steps. 180 °C converts to exactly 356 °F, but no American oven offers 356 — recipes round it to 350, and the 6-degree gap is well inside an oven's own temperature swing. Use the converter for exactness and the chart for what to actually set the dial to. Fan ovens run about 20 °C lower than the conventional figures given here and in most recipes.

The exact formula

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
Gas Mark is the British oven scale: each full mark above 1 adds roughly 14 °C (25 °F), starting from Gas Mark 1 at 140 °C / 275 °F. The chart below shows the conventional settings ovens are actually marked with — rounded steps (350 °F for 180 °C) rather than the raw arithmetic (356 °F).

Exact constants, honest rounding. Every conversion here uses the exact international definitions printed on the page (1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly). Results are rounded for display only — the working underneath is never rounded. For engineering, medical or legal work, verify against a certified instrument.

Frequently asked questions

What gas mark is 180 °C?

Gas Mark 4 — 180 °C / 350 °F is the standard 'moderate oven' of baking.

What is 350 °F in Celsius?

176.67 °C exactly; recipes round it to 180 °C (or 175 °C). The two-degree difference does not move a cake.

How much do I reduce the temperature for a fan oven?

About 20 °C (roughly 35–40 °F) below the conventional figure, as a rule of thumb — so 180 °C conventional becomes 160 °C fan. Check your oven's manual for its own guidance.
